Midweek Winter Session: Conversation without words

24 June, 2015 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

R80 - R100

Louise Howlett presents a single Winter Midweek Session this coming Wednesday 24 June with three of Cape Town’s great jazz interpreters.

Saxophonist Tristan Weitkamp joins forces with guitarist Tony Cedras and percussion legend Dizu Plaatjies in a ‘Conversations without Words’ – an cultural collision of music improvisation showing how sound can bring us together.

Tony is from Cape Town but has spent much of his musical journey away from SA during the years of apartheid. Through that time Tony travelled the world performing with a myriad of renowned artists including Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, the Amandla Cultural Ensemble, and perhaps is best known as being one of the central members to Paul Simon’s Graceland tour. Aside from his career as a respected ‘sideman’ his own compositions and artistic pursuits are truly unique and beautiful. Throughout his travelling career Tony has remembered his Khoisan heritage and returned to South Africa, his true home.

Dizu Plaatjies, from the Eastern Cape is revered for his musicality, knowledge and his prowess as an artistic director. He has travelled to numerous African countries in order to learn the musical traditions of their people and culture in which those traditions are entwined. Dizu believes that music, history and culture are truly one entity and therefore studies all aspects of a place in order to the learn about the music. He is also the director of African Music Studies at UCT College of Music. Dizu’s musical career has been centered around his group Amampondo which he started in the late 1970’s and which has toured extensively around the world.

Tristan Weitkamp, the youngest of the trio is a composer and saxophonist from the USA. He came to South Africa as a student to study about African music and social affairs at UCT. However during his stay he has performed with many different musicians and recently produced and recorded a CD of original music with his group New Horizons. Culturally speaking ‘American’ doesn’t cut it in Tristan’s opinion but as he was an adopted child, Tristan knows little about his ethnic identity aside from white and blonde, therefore he is no a journey to define his own culture and feels that the best way to do this is through music.

The concert starts at 7.30 and there is plenty of well lit parking right outside the Church – on Greenmarket Square itself. Delicious coffee and hot chocolate to keep warm inside the church and a special ‘meal-deal’ for before or after the session at Bellini’s Italian restaurant on the square.

Tickets available at the door on the night from 7pm priced just R80/R50 for students and pensioners. For more information contact Louise Howlett on 084 682 1337 / info@louisehowlett.co.za
